Overall Rating: 2.4
Director: Buddy Cooper, John Douglass
Gore Factor: ... It's literally called the mutilator. Lots of bad 80's gore.
Rewatchability: Show your friends. Watch with them.
Watch If: You have a thing for terrible, aweful, hilarious failure films.
Not If: You want something good or scary.
Similar To: The Evil Dead (1981), They're Watching
The Bare Bones: A Young man who accidentally killed his mother and drives his father insane -yes, you read that right- Goes to his father's condo with his friends, where they are killed off one by one.
And the more I think about the set up, the more I like The Mutilator. Someone put a lot of thought into this plot line, even if it doesn't show in the film.
I mean, the main character accidentally killed his mom? That's the first scene in the movie. It's beautiful, and I sure as hell haven't seen it done quite like this before.
For a film that wasn't intended to be a comedy, the comedic timing is remarkable. The use of effects and the ham-fisted attempts at exposition make the entire film feel like a spoof of horror rather than a horror film itself.
So while it failed at being a scary horror film, this is, and is likely to remain, one of my favorite "so bad it's good" gems that made it out of the 80's.
